Session 7: Barbarians Never Learn

Our tale takes place in the ruined city of Neverwinter, a nexus of brave adventurers hoping to forge their destiny within the crumbled and apocalyptic shell of a once grand city.

Our adventure starts in the Bawdy Boar, a rough and tumble tavern filled with a motley assortment of patrons including Helg Firebeard– it’s purveyor.  Our adventures noticed that some new faces found their way to the inn. The Bawdy Boar is known for it’s Shield Wall, a wall within the tavern that serves as a message board filled with potential work for would-be adventurers and cryptic messages between said adventurers. On with the story…

Today’s cast of Neverwinter protagonists include…

  • Kaiser Hemlocke (Mike M): human | ranger4
  • Baron Silas Hightower (John): half orc | fighter4
  • Hildegarde Stonewall (Sharon): dwarven | rogue4
  • D’Addario (Brian): elf | noble
  • “Chowder” (Joe): human | fighter3
  • ? (?): half elf? | fighter1

Three Viking Chiefs did it all for the nookie…

With at least 4 options to choose from, we chose a mission from Ambassador Joln Whitedge of the Lord’s Alliance.  This mission was to protect Port Llast and it’s patron, Lord Jomley Orwyne & his wife Lady Lista.

We gather our papers from Ambassador Whitedge and make our way north to Port Llast, a small village and sea post that resides three days above Neverwinter.

Along the way we meet a group of refugees from the city, led by Ser Rupert Seacliff.  The knight informs us that everyone has fled Port Llast for fear of impending Northman sea raiders (basically vikings).  He tells us that the viking relationship soured when The Lord of the manor wanted to bed a serving wench named Melinda who was betrothed to a Northern Clan Leader named Torstein the Mirthful.  Disrespected and angered, the viking chief vowed to decimate Port Llast with aid from two other viking chiefs, Bolgar Threeaxe and Knut Shieldbreaker.

The Arrival

We arrive to a nearly empty Port Llast and laughable defenses consisting of a minor keep and four guards.  The city is all but deserted.

We strut in and provide our services to the Lord.  After some discussion, we are able to rally the troops and attempt to fortify the city.  D’Addario rallies the Lord’s wife.

You have something on your chin…

After some time we meet the lady of the hour, our Helen of Troy, a beauty named Melinda.  We continue fortifications and here a loud warning horn.  The first wave of Northmen are landing their ships.  We make it to the city and set up pincer attack.  We quickly take out a handful of northmen and Chowder was able to subdue their leader, Knut Shieldbreaker.

We allow him to live provided he leaves and does not come back.  He makes the vow and they leave.

We make our way back to the keep and our party splits.  Half went in search for the treasury (and we get lost after a series of 1 and 2 rolls) and the other half attempts to boost morals.

The Second Wave…

After night falls, the second wave of Northmen land just north of the city.  This group consist of 50+ Northmen, led by Bolgar Threeaxe.  Hildegaurde sneaks into their camp while they are preparing for the siege.  She sneaks further in and lobs her last potion of cloudkill into the middle of these invaders.

Madness ensues and this second wave of vikings flee without a single swipe of our blades.

Baron’s Last Stand

The third wave lands and prepares their attack.  The number well over 100 and are led by the strongest of the three Northman Chiefs.  His name was Torstein the Mirthful, and he is bad, bad man.

They send a herald and he gives us an offer to leave.  The Lord of the Keep (a raving asshole and senile old degenerate) promises us riches but finally realizes that this was no laughing matter.  He flees, via boat, during this final siege.

We trade bow shots with the enemy and lob Thayvian fire upon their masses, severely cutting into their ranks.  We stop their battering ram but Torstein himself , who was angered after Baron hit him with a fireball, breaks down the outer gate while his men attempt to breach the portcullis.

He and his men are met with more fireballs which, sadly, damaged the keep’s gate- allowing access to the inside of the keep.  We fight off wave after wave of invaders and eventually take down Torstein (he was a beast!), but at the loss of our half orc Baron.

We defend the keep, stabilize Baron and the Northmen flee.

Treasure Procured

not much in the way of gold and items, but we did get a very nice XP bump

Great job team
